Carlo Valsecchi | Bellum 1 May – 31 July 2022
The 2022 Fotografia Europea festival is dedicated to the theme of “an invincible summer” (a quote from Albert Camus’s Return to Tipasa), celebrating the capacity to weather adversity and to respond with new reflections on human existence. In conjunction with it, Collezione Maramotti will present a commissioned project by photographer Carlo Valsecchi. Bellum explores fortifications in northeast Italy dating back to World War I, one of the last times in history when human fate and experience – needs for defence or strategies of attack, chances of survival or certainties of death – were directly linked to the laws, conditions and whims of Nature. Through an investigation lasting over two years, Valsecchi has infused his nearly abstract photographs with a raw, compelling vitality, in light-based compositions that hover between the loneliness and waiting of the past, and of the present.
Max Mara Art Prize for Women, in collaboration with Whitechapel Gallery Emma Talbot 23 October 2022 – 19 February 2023
After the first phase at Whitechapel Gallery in London, Collezione Maramotti will be the next stop for the project that Emma Talbot, winner of the eighth Max Mara Art Prize for Women (2019 – 2022), developed over her six-month residency in Reggio Emilia, Catania and Rome. Its starting point was Gustav Klimt’s painting Three Ages of Woman (1905) – housed at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna in Rome – which portrays a naked elderly woman standing with her head bowed as if in shame. Talbot invests the older woman with agency, presenting her with a series of challenges. Through her modern-day Labours of Hercules, Talbot suggests this figure has the potential to rebuild our society, countering prevalent negative attitudes towards ageing. The exhibition questions deeply rooted positions of power, governance, attitudes to nature and representations of women. The works will be produced in Reggio Emilia with the aid of partners who embody Italian expertise in their sector (Modateca Deanna, Imax, Mantero).
