Six Coats - The Fall Winter 2021/22 Iconic Coats Project is an up-to-date revival of six all-black iconic coats — an ode to the past through women who defined the 20th century idea of style
Over the decades, these landmark silhouettes have transformed in-tandem with the times and in the name of fashion. Their iconic contours have been etched in the pages of fashion history for their contribution to the style of each era. Varying volumes and proportions envisaged for the time in which they were made, have been reinterpreted in a contemporary light. Awash in absolute black, the non-color par excellence associated with a multitude of fashion souls — each coat is unique in its different meanings, seductive poetry, its rebellion, austerity and design. Filtered through an optic of sobriety, pragmatism, impetuosity, every style is unique with dissimilar attitudes, united by the incredible sculptural power of a timeless present.
Six coats are tied to six unforgettable women, all of whom embody bold, decisive femininity and permeate a spirit of independence: Colette, Renée Breton, Dovima, Penelope Tree, Lauren Hutton and Guinevere Van Seenus.
Distinct fabrics were selected for each model, with the aim of conjuring a sensorial memory and the legacy each era left behind.
1900, The body is finally free
The life of Colette, the French writer and actress known for her anti-conformist and emancipated, charming lifestyle characteristic of the early 1900s, is expressed in a wool redingote super-stretch model that offers maximum comfort.
1940, Between shape and sensuality
A tribute to model and muse Renée Breton, this ultra-feminine double face coat is dominated by a waistline fashioned with a 1940s flair.
1950, Sumptuosity and Sophistication Attitudine
The ample shape and faux fur accents, call to mind the glamour of the 1950s, which was made famous by Dovima, an ante-litteram model whose image was immortalised by Richard Avedon.
1960, Experiment, invent, dare
Penelope Tree, the greatly admired ingenue of Truman Capote’s legendary Black and White Ball, was adored by renowned photographers who launched her career. She embodies 1960’s the grit expressed by a vinyl jacket.
1970, My wardrobe, my choice
Lauren Hutton’s effortless chic and her ascent to Hollywood stardom with the film American Gigolo contributed to the effortless-chic atmosphere of the 1970s and inspired the alpaca-blend, belted coat fashioned with statement shoulders.
1990, Essentiality is the purest state
A gabardine coat infused with a tech touch takes some cues from American top model Guinevere Van Seenus, whose hypnotic, minimalistic 1990s allure left an indelible mark between two millennia.
The Capsule Collection will be visible for two weeks from 5th October to 18th October at Rinascente Duomo Milano with a Pop Up (4th floor).
